  1. ===LATE-BREAKING NEWS======================================================
  2.  
  3. This "README" file has some additional information and late-breaking news that
  4. could not make the manual as well as some important pieces of technical
  5. information.
  6.  
  7. MEMORY REQUIREMENTS.  3-D DINOSAUR ADVENTURE requires approximately 520KB of
  8. RAM in order to run.  Even when there is adequate total RAM to run the
  9. program, there may be conflicts with other programs occupying memory.  If you
  10. experience difficulty in running 3-D DINOSAUR ADVENTURE under these
  11. circumstances, please remove other memory resident programs from memory.  In
  12. MS-DOS versions 5.0 and above type "MEM /C | MORE" to see what programs and
  13. drivers are loaded in memory.  To verify the RAM available, check the next
  14. screen for "Largest executable program size" parameter in K.  In MS-DOS
  15. version 6.0 and above try running the MEMMAKER program to free more
  16. conventional RAM. For more information about conventional memory and memory
  17. management please consult your DOS manual.
  18.  
  19. RUNNING FROM WINDOWS.  To avoid possible complications under the Windows
  20. environment, clicking on the 3-D DINOSAUR ADVENTURE icon will actually shut
  21. down Windows, run 3-D DINOSAUR ADVENTURE, then re-start Windows on exit from
  22. 3-D DINOSUAR ADVENTURE.  You may get a message saying, "Application still
  23. active.  Quit the application before quitting Windows." Switch to any other
  24. running DOS applications and exit them normally, then click on the 3-D
  25. DINOSAUR ADVENTURE icon again.  If you have Windows applications already
  26. running, they will be shut down and you will be asked to save any unsaved
  27. data.
  28.  
  29. UPGRADING YOUR SOUND DEVICE.  The "Set Sound Volume" selection in the
  30. Knowledge Adventure Menu System is specifically designed for your
  31. Packard Bell system.  This feature may not function with other sound
  32. devices.  But, you may use the software that comes with your new sound
  33. device to control volume levels.
  34.  
  35. ALT-S/ALT-M. These keys will toggle sound and music (respectively) off and on,
  36. this function may not be functional in all areas of the program.
  37.  
  38. LAPTOP/NOTEBOOK COMPUTER DISPLAYS. 3-D DINOSAUR ADVENTURE requires a color VGA
  39. monitor to display its high-resolution images.  It will not work on the
  40. internal plasma or LCD monitors on laptop PCs.  Most laptops, however, have a
  41. connector for an external monitor, and 3-D DINOSAUR ADVENTURE will work fine
  42. with your laptop hooked to an external VGA monitor.  3-D DINOSAUR ADVENTURE
  43. will run fine on certain laptop screens, such as the Toshiba 4400SXC, COMPAQ
  44. LTE's and the PC BRAND NB 486slc which have 256 shades of grey or color
  45. screens.  The only problem will be that the right edge of the screen will be
  46. slightly cut off.  This is due to the fact that 3-D DINOSAUR ADVENTURE runs in
  47. the extra high resolution VGA video mode of 360 x 480 pixels with 256 colors
  48. and most of the internal laptop screens can only display 320 pixels in width.
  49.  
  50. MONO, CGA, and EGA DISPLAYS. 3-D DINOSAUR ADVENTURE requires a VGA color
  51. monitor and therefore will not run on these monitors.
  52.  
  53. MOUSE SUPPORT. 3-D DINOSAUR ADVENTURE takes great advantage of your mouse if
  54. you have one, but it does not require one.  There are keyboard equivalents
  55. which will allow you to enjoy the product without a mouse.  Refer to "Using
  56. 3-D DINOSAUR Adventure" for more information.
  57.  
  58. DIGITIZING TABLETS.  Digitizing tablets are not supported by 3-D BODY
  59. ADVENTURE. If you are using a digitizing tablet and it is not functioning
  60. properly, unplug the tablet, plug in a mouse, and restart 3-D BODY ADVENTURE.
  61. Your tablet manufacturer may be able to provide a software solution to any
  62. problems experienced.
  63.  
  64. LOW VOLUME SOUND OR MUSIC.  Sound cards that allow software volume control  
  65. may have different volume levels for sound and music.  If you hear a 
  66. noticable difference, you should run the volume control program that came  
  67. with you sound card to equal out the settings.
  68.  
  69. WINMATE USERS.  3-D DINOSAUR ADVENTURE install program will not generate a
  70. Knowledge Adventure program group and icon if you run under Winmate - even
  71. if you said YES to the Windows question during install.  Manually add the
  72. 3-D Dinosaur Icon to Winmate after installation is complete.

  74. COMPAQ PROLINEA.  During INSTALL, press ENTER if you get a message stating
  75. that you do not have a VGA system.  If you receive a similar message while
  76. executing DINO3D, please contact Compaq Technical Support for a patch program
  77. that will correct this problem with some early model Prolineas.
  78.  
  79. GRAVIS ULTRASOUND.  The Gravis Ultrasound requires a large driver to load its
  80. more realistic "wavetable" instruments to the sound card (about 20-25kb more
  81. than other sound cards requiring a total of 580 kb).  Consequently, you may
  82. have to free up additional memory in order to perform properly.  If you plan
  83. to run 3-D DINOSAUR ADVENTURE from Windows please do NOT run your ULTRAMID or
  84. ULTRASND TSR program before entering Windows.  3-D DINOSAUR ADVENTURE will
  85. load and unload this program itself.
  86.  
  87. ROLAND SOUND CARDS.  Roland sound cards have high quality music but no digital
  88. speech capability.  You will not get digitized speech and sound effects
  89. without an additional sound board.  If you have a second sound card, you will
  90. have to manually edit the SoundDriver and SoundDevParams section of the KA.CNF
  91. file.  An example setup for a Sound Blaster card with a hardware configuration
  92. of base address 220, interrupt 5, and DMA channel 1 would be:

  95.      soundDriver       : D:\DINO3D\drivers\SBDIG.DRV
  96.                          (where D: is your CDROM drive)

  98. Other sound cards can be configured in a similar way, choose the correct
  99. Driver from the following list:

  101. ALGDIG.DRV   - Ad Lib Gold
  102. ARIADIG.DRV  - Aria
  103. GRAVISDG.DRV - Gravis Ultra Sound
  104. LANTSND.DRV  - LANtastic Voice
  105. PASDIG.DRV   - Pro AudioSpectrum/Studio 8/16
  106.                (DMA's 0 - 3, otherwise configure for Sound Blaster)
  107. SBPDIG.DRV   - Sound Blaster Pro
  108.

  112. DIGISPEECH PORTABLE.  If you are using the Digispeech PortAble Sound Plus,
  113. check the date of your BMASTER.* driver files.  If the files are dated earlier
  114. than August, 1993, contact Digispeech or our BBS for an update.
  115.  
  116. REVEAL SOUND FX MODEL SC600.  If problems occur in Windows after returning 
  117. from a DOS application, you may need to update your sound drivers for Windows.

  121. PC SPEAKER. The PC Speaker is not supported in 3-D DINOSAUR ADVENTURE CD-ROM.
